Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica.
To list the various species of butterflies, identify their larval state, study their diet are the first steps needed to understand the role of these insects on the dynamics of the forests. A team of scientists works since 2006 in Costa Rican on the collection and the identification of moths and butterflies in north-west, in the heart of the Guanacaste Conservation Area. We followed them once to collect butterflies. In front of the tense bright trap, insects fly from everywhere : grasshoppers, beetles, bugs, mantises, mosquitoes and countless butterflies. The second part of the project is based on the study of butterflies larval development, in other words, the capture of caterpillars. But the task is tough, caterpillars are often queens of the camouflage!
