Gandoca, Tortuguero, Caribbean coast, Costa Rica
The beaches of the National Park Tortuguero and the National Refuge of Wildlife Gandoca-Manzanillo are favorites sites of nesting for leatherback turtles and green turtles. Faced with the threat of poaching eggs, two organizations were created : the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) first conservation project of marine turtles in the world, and the association ANAI. These initiatives allowed to find stable populations of chéloniens on these beaches, converted poachers into naturalist guides and developed a responsible tourism in association with the Ministry of the Environment.
The volunteers come to support these initiatives, patrol on beaches and assist the scientists in their researches. By participating in the local economy, they help to convince the local population that a living egg is more profitable than a poached egg.
