Punta Laguna, peninsule du Yucatan, Mexico /
Curu, Nicoya peninsula, Costa Rica
The spider monkey, or atele, is the subject of several conservation programs run by both local and international volunteers. In the traditional Mayan village at Punta Laguna, Mexico, the community has chosen to protect the forest rather than to produce corn. The area has become a refuge for many wildlife species.
In Costa Rica, the refuge of Curu receives spider monkeys seized by the Ministry of Environment (MINAET) in private homes and luxury hotels. Two enclosures built by the locals with the help of volunteers, host groups of monkeys. Volunteers are in charge of feeding the primates, ensuring their well-being and enriching the enclosures. Some of them, that become too used to human contact, cannot be released: they are visible to visitors and have become ambassadors for the project.
