Reforma Agraria, Chiapas, Mexico.
Reforma Agraria, Chiapas.
Along the border with Guatemala, the Reserve of Biosphere of Horsemanships Azules is the last Mexican sanctuary of the magnificent Scarlet macaw. 40 families, native of the State of Oaxaca, established here the "ejido" (lands used in common) of Reforma Agraria and created the eco-tourist center of Las Guacamayas. Since 1991, with the support of the National Indigenous Institute, they are working for the conservation of this parrot, endangered by deforestation and poaching.
The members of the village try to compensate for a lack of trees needed for the bird to nest, by building artificial nests several meters in height. A unique community project in the country.
