Shiwiar territory lies south-east of the Ecuadorian Amazon. This area of primary forest, only accessible by air, is the home to 750 natives who share their culture with that of Shuar and Achuar. Shiwiar people came into contact with the Western world in 1941, during the war between Ecuador and Peru. Today, faced with pressure from the government and oil companies, people struggle to protect its land from massive deforestation.
